Configure a Hyper-V Machine to Boot From WDS

In this blog post, I’ll show you how to configure a Hyper-V Machine to Boot From WDS directly.

When using WDS and Hyper-V we can Integrate the two technologies and make the deployment process easier and faster.

In my case, I’ll show you how I create a new VM and configure It to boot from WDS as soon as it starts.

About WDS

Windows Deployment Services (WDS) is a Microsoft server technology network-based installation of Windows operating systems. It is the successor to Remote Installation Services (RIS).

WDS is intended to be used for remotely deploying Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2016.

It also supports other operating systems because unlike its predecessor RIS, which was a method of automating the installation process, WDS uses disk imaging, in particular, the Windows Imaging Format (WIM).

WDS is included as a Server Role on Windows Server 2016, Installation time takes 5 minutes the most and there are no prerequisites except the Windows Server hardware requirements.

About Hyper-V

Microsoft Hyper-V, formerly known as Windows Server Virtualization, is a native hypervisor he comes with Windows Server.

It can create virtual machines on x86-64 systems running Windows. Starting with Windows 8, Hyper-V superseded Windows Virtual PC and now it comes with Windows 10 by default.

Hyper-V was first released alongside Windows Server 2008 and has been available without charge for all the Windows Server and some client operating systems since.

The Process

To get started, I’m creating a new Virtual Machine on my Hyper-V Server using the new VM wizard and follow the steps until the part where I need to select a network

In the Configure Networking screen, I’ll select the network my WDS Server is located.

This part is very important because the VM needs to be In the same network as the WDS Server.

In the Installation Options page, I’ll select the last option to boot the VM from a WDS Server (network-based Installation)

Once the VM is booted, All I need to do Is click F12
