How to Enable And Create An Office 365 Remote Mail User

 

In this blog post, I’ll show you How to Enable And Create An Office 365 Remote Mail User that will allow me to route emails a user that his mailbox exists on Exchange Online.

Remote Mail Is an Active Directory Object that first appeared with the release Of Exchange Server 2010 SP2 and Is allowing us to redirect messages to Mailbox Hosted on Exchange Online while the organization messaging system Is In Hybrid Mode.

When using the Online Move to move mailboxes from On-premises Exchange Server to Exchange Online the migration wizard will create the object to the migrated user automatically however In some cases the object details are not correct or corrupted and need to be created again.

We enable Remote Mail User using the Exchange Server Management Shell (EMS) with the cmdlet below:

Note: we can either enable an existing user to be a remote mail user or create a new mail user

enable-RemoteMailbox "John Citrix" -RemoteRoutingAddress [email protected]

In the example below, I’ll create a new Remote Mail User which will also create an Active Directory User Account for the Object.

New-RemoteMailbox "John Vsphere" -UserPrincipalName [email protected] -RemoteRoutingAddress [email protected]
