How to Enable DRS on VMware vSphere 6.5

In this blog post, I’ll show you How to Enable DRS on VMware vSphere 6.5

vSphere Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), In Its 4th release, allows us to use the Intelligence of VSphere to automatically balance our compute resources across all the host In the cluster.

When enabled, DRS will make sure the load on all VM Hosts Is even and virtual machines are not performing below standards.

DRS also offers advanced features like Admission Control an Initial Placement of VMs In the best host, In case there are not enough resources on the hosts the VM will not start.

It also allows us to start a group of VMs (Group Power-on) and balance them across multiple hosts.

When enabled, DRS can automatically migrate VMs and load can be distributed more efficiently which leads to better performance of VMs.

Currently, VMware offers 3 DRS modes:

  • Manual – In this mode you review the recommendation made by DRS and decide to move or not to move the VM
  • Partially Automated – VMs migrated on started only to the best host
  • Fully automated – VM migrated automatically

DRS requirements are as follow:

  • Your VM Cluster needs to have a shared storage
  • Process compatibility requirements which mean that your hosts CPU should be on a similar level (you could enable EVC which will make all the hosts in the cluster present the same CPU features)
  • Have a vMotion network configured

The recommended DRS mode is Fully Automated and the reason I’m saying that is because DRS Is a mature technology with an amazing track record.

To get started and configure DRS, click on your Cluster -> Configure -> vSphere -> vSphere DRS and set the automation level

Once done, You will see it as Turned ON

To view DRS actions made by vSphere, Click on the Cluster and select -> Monitor -> vSphere DRS
