How to Enable Storage DRS on vSphere 6.5
How to Enable Storage DRS on vSphere: Following the last blog post, this post will show you how to deploy vSphere Storage DRS on vSphere 6.5.
Storage DRS, allows us to manage datastores resources In our environment and move, balance and control disk performance of Virtual Machines.
When enabled, Storage DRS will control the placement of new Virtual Machines disk on the best possible datastore making sure all data stores have enough free disk space and I/O load.
Storage DRS purpose Is to do three things:
- Load balance disk space load
- I/O load balancing across datastores
- Initial placement of virtual machines based on space and I/O
The requirements of DRS are:
- Shared Storage disk
- Datastore Cluster
If you have an existing vSphere Cluster and storage configured you don’t need to do anything except create a new Datastore cluster and enable storage DRS as you will see below.
Starting with the main requirement, I’ll create a Datastore Cluster from the storage section
Click on Storage > New Datastore Cluster
Click on Turn on Storage DRS
How to Enable Storage DRS on vSphere: Follow the wizard and select the DRS automation level from the 3 options below:
DRS storage offers 3 DRS automation levels
No Automation (Manual Mode) – Placement and migration recommendations are displayed but do not run until you manually apply the recommendation. Partially Automated – Placement recommendations run automatically and migration recommendations are displayed but do not run until you manually apply the recommendation.
Fully Automated – Placement and migration recommendations run automatically
In my case, I’ll select Fully automated
Once done, recommendation will be displayed under Datastore -> Monitor -> Storage DRS
